Most visitors who come to Rijeka Crnojevića stroll along the river, take a few photos by the old bridge, sip coffee, and drive on — unaware of what they’ve missed. This quiet place, tucked behind the final bend of the old Podgorica to Virpazar road, was once the heart of a kingdom.
Cross the bridge, and you enter Obod, a place that was once a center of Montenegrin cultural heritage.
More than five centuries ago, the first printing press in the region echoed here, inside the Obod Printing House. In 1494, it produced the Oktoih - the first book ever printed in Cyrillic on Balkan soil. The press is long gone, but if you stay still for a moment, you might feel the weight of ink and thoughts, and hear the whisper of old pages in the rustling of leaves.
The path rises gently, winding through wild fig trees and overgrown gardens. It follows the line of Riječki mlinovi - the old watermills of Rijeka, where grain was ground into flour by the power of those mighty waters. The river still flows through the ruined chambers of those mills, turning stones when no one is watching.
I would not call this trail impressive in its usual meaning. Meanwhile it so meditative in its own special way. Following the river bed, you can see the round small baths the water carved in the stones, how they preserve its freezing cold water clear for days, and then, when summer comes, they become shelter to many creatures seeking salvation from the heat.
This path invites you to walk slowly, with figs in your pocket, your fingers brushing moss-covered stones that feel like velvet.
In the quiet, something stirs - a sense that everything is still here: the bold words, the turning wheels, and the eternal river.
