Oblun fortress - Balšin Grad

On the southern edge of the Zeta Valley, above the gentle flow of the Morača River, steep hills rise in shades of grey, covered in wild pomegranate and blackthorn. White flocks of sheep pattern the slopes, while the sharp whistles of shepherds echo across the open heights. These hills were once home to Illyrian tribes. Now they lie silent, watched over by the remains of ancient megalithic fortresses—including Oblun Fortress—still standing as enduring witnesses to battles fought more than two thousand years ago.

The trail begins at the foot of Markova Gorica, where Oblun (Obolon) Fortress rests near the bay of Malo Blato. From there, it climbs the rocky hillside. The ascent is steep, but each step reveals wider views. At the top, beside the ruins of an old church, the world opens. Sunrises and sunsets spill their colour across the still waters of Lake Skadar. From here, you can watch planes circling before landing and follow flocks of pelicans and cormorants as they fly between the Morača River and the lake, and back again.
