The view on Skadar lake islands from the top of Velja Gora
In the early morning, those who climb Velja Gora are often met with a breathtaking sight — the distant southwestern shore of Lake Skadar glowing through the haze. From this high, open ridge, it is easy to drift into thoughts of Montenegro’s turbulent past and imagine the lives once lived here — in times of war, exile, and quiet devotion.
The trail begins in Parci, a small hillside village perched above the main road between Podgorica and Cetinje. From there, a steady climb leads across wide, rocky ground. The wind rushes in your ears, the sky opens above, and history seems to move beneath your feet.

The Legend of Saint Elijah’s Church
Just below the summit of Velja Gora stands Ilija’s Hill, where a small stone church — Saint Elijah’s — has stood since 1696. According to local legend, Duke Vuksan Bulatović of Rovca was captured by the Pasha of Skadar for refusing to pay tribute. From his prison cell, through a narrow window, he could see only one distant peak — Velja Gora.
He made a vow: if he ever escaped, he would build a church on that very hilltop, as a monument to freedom, faith, and return. And so he did, with the help of villagers who believed in the same dream.

Today, on August 2nd, locals still gather at the church to honor this legacy.
